National Nest Box Week starts on Valentine’s Day!
National Nest Box Week is an initiative run by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and runs every year between 14 – 21 February. The aim is to encourage as many people as possible to put up nest boxes in their local area in order to promote and enhance biodiversity. Many natural bird nesting sites are disappearing as gardens and woods are tidied up and old houses are repaired. Providing an alternative site, in the form of a nest box, can help our wild birds enormously.
The BTO provides informative tips on how to build, monitor and maintain your nest box. If you don’t fancy the idea of testing out your woodwork skills there is a huge variety of nest boxes on the market designed to suit a wide range of avian species! Lee Ecology is also able to make bespoke nest boxes so please get in touch if you would like further information. Remember that nesting birds should not be disturbed so observe the box from a distance once it has been occupied.
